Preparing spot UV business card artwork

The UV plate is treated as a single (spot) colour and setting up the artwork is simple to do. Accuracy is key.

If we are designing your Spot UV Business Card for you we will take care of the UV preparation. If you're designing your own business card then the following will explain how to set up the UV artwork.

The UV artwork needs to be on a seperate layer to the rest of your business card artwork. It should be 100% black and needs to cover the entire area you wish to have UV gloss added to. The above spot UV business card sample is for Stittle Boat Services and features spot UV gloss waves across the bottom of the card. The Spot UV file should contain no other artwork elements apart from the Spot UV area. Below is an image of the main artwork file and the Spot UV file.

Spot UV Registration

In the above example the Spot UV is blind registered which means it isn't being applied on top of part of the graphics on the main file. Spot UV registration can vary around 1mm, in the case of the blind registered waves above it won't matter if the Spot UV waves move 1mm to the right or left. If we were to add Spot UV on top of the logo so that it covered the white, light grey and orange graphics, it may move slightly so registration may not be perfect. Keep this in mind if you plan to have Spot UV added on top of a graphical element on your main business card artwork file. It is important to ensure your Spot UV file sits perfectly on top of your business card graphics when you supply the file. This will help us achieve the best registration possible if you want Spot UV on top part of your business card graphics.
